I will share some tools I’ve had on set and ones I wish I had brought. Let’s dive in!

I’ve used these tools and will use them in the future when I get those rare and exciting bookings!

Tools for Comfort and Convenience

1. Portable Hand-Held Fan

This is my favorite device to carry on and off-set. If you’ve ever worked on any film set, you don’t need me to explain how hot it can get. I once was on a student film set and would have done almost anything to cool off!

I bring my portable hand-held fan whenever I leave the house in the summertime. It’s just smart! It’s one of the best tools for actors trying to keep cool!

2. Portable Folding Chair

This is a smart item to have with you because you never know how long you’ll be waiting between takes or whether you’ll have a place to sit.

You obviously can’t bring the chair onto the filming spot, but it could be a good tool if you need a place to sit. Use your best judgment to determine when it’s okay to have your own chair and when it isn’t.

3. Mini Massage Gun

That’s right—those massage guns you all know and love come in mini-sizes! As actors, we work hard on set, and our feet and bodies get sore as we perform.

The mini-massage gun is your best option unless the production has a professional masseuse on site. Of all the tools for actors, this one packs the most punch!

4. Portable Charger / Power Bank

Need I explain this one? Fine!

A power bank serves the same purpose on set as anywhere else. Keep those devices fully charged on the go!

Food and Hydration Items

5. Personal Snack Pack

Craft services do their best and often do a great job! If you’re on a specific diet like mine, having your food items with you is best.

For example, I eat low-carb, keto, and carnivore-friendly foods, so sugary snacks and meals won’t cut it for me. Be prepared with your own food items so you’re not hangry on set!

6. Vacuume Insulated Water Bottle

You have to get one of these vacuum-insulated water bottles. They keep your coffee hot for the entire shoot, or your water stays cold if it’s a scorcher under those lights.

It’s super handy for long days on set and spill-proof, so there’s no worry about messing up the set or costumes. It’s also a game-changer for staying hydrated or caffeinated while running lines.

7. Reusable Coffee Cup (for warm beverages)

This is a must-have for coffee or tea enthusiasts. Sipping a warm drink during breaks is comforting and rejuvenating.

A reusable cup is eco-friendly, keeps your drink warm, and is easy to carry around. You can also personalize it to reflect your style!

8. Electrolyte Packets or Rehydration Salts

Long hours under bright lights can be dehydrating. These packets are a lifesaver, replenishing essential salts and minerals lost through sweat.

Add them to your water bottle, and you’re ready. They come in various flavors, making hydration a little more enjoyable!

Tools for Personal Care

9. Personal Makeup Kit with Mirror

I’ll be honest, I’m not someone who would typically have their own makeup kit, mainly because I’m a guy who’s not comfortable doing their own makeup, but it doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea!

If you’re comfortable touching up your makeup on set or having it available for others to use on you, it’s a good idea! Especially for smaller shoots like student films or short films.

10. Wet Wipes (for Keeping Things Clean and Fresh)

I won’t ask you any questions if you don’t ask me! Lol.

Sometimes, we must clean something up; wet wipes are always handy. Use whichever brand you enjoy the most. I think ‘Dude Wipes’ is a winner, but that’s just me. They are a very handy item to have on set.

11. Personal Hygiene Kit

This item might accompany your wet wipes, but I thought those should be called out separately.

Keep toothpaste, a toothbrush, deodorant, breath mints, a tongue scrapper, hand sanitizer, and even more wet wipes in your hygiene kit! You won’t regret having them.

12. Sun Protection

If you’re sensitive to the sun, be sure to have sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat available if you’ll be filming outdoors in the sunshine.

Ideally, productions should have adequate accommodations for this, but it’s always best to come prepared anyway!

Clothing Needs on Set

13. Lunch Shirt

This item is exactly what it sounds like. A ‘lunch shirt’ is what you wear over your costume during lunch or any other on-set eating activity.

The last thing you want to do on set is get nacho cheese all over your costume! The lunch shirt allows you to keep your costume clean without taking it off.

Think of it as a bib for grownups. You could also bring an actual bib but don’t blame me if your fellow actors and crew make fun of you for it.

14. Comfortable Footwear

Whether it’s slippers or sneakers, it’s in your best interest to have comfortable shoes to slip into between scenes. You don’t want sore feet distracting you from your performance.

Keep a pair nearby so you’re always ready to give your feet a well-deserved break.

15. Layered Clothing Options

The set temperature can be unpredictable, so having layers is wise.

A light jacket, a cozy sweater, or even a thermal undergarment can make all the difference in staying comfortable, whether it’s too cold or too hot on set.

16. Extra Socks

You’d be surprised how fresh socks can uplift your mood!

Whether for comfort, warmth or just feeling fresh, extra socks are a small but significant comfort you can give yourself on a long day of shooting.

Mindset and Mental Wellbeing

17. Journal or Notebook

Jotting down thoughts, experiences, or even lines can be therapeutic.

It helps to clear your mind, focus on your goals, and reflect on your daily experiences. A small journal or notebook is a great companion for those quieter moments on set.

18. Relaxation Techniques or Mindfulness Apps

Keeping calm and centered on set is crucial.

Whether it’s a meditation app, breathing exercises, or quick yoga stretches, these tools can help maintain mental and emotional balance amidst a hectic environment.

19. A Positive Attitude

This is the most important tool for acting! You don’t want to appear cranky on set and act like a grouch. The ability to stay positive will take you farther than any acting classes! Lol.

I am just kidding, but as you know, acting is hard work, and getting frustrated is normal.

Staying positive is the best way to build those relationships as you grow your career. Picture yourself 10 years from now. What stage will you be performing on? What audience will you be performing for?

Sides are easy to securely attach to each rehearsal, making it simple for the actor and the reader to access while you read for the other character in the scene.

A rehearsal session includes a split screen between the video and the script. The tabs on the sessions include:

• Partner List – A list of individuals involved in the session
• Script/Files – For uploading scripts (can’t be downloaded by the reader)
• Chat – For additional communication options
• Settings – To adjust your video/mic settings
• Time – Shows time left in the call
• +15mins – Adds 15 more minutes to the session (both must click)
• Record Actor – Video record the actor (most record on a separate device)
• Refresh – Refreshes the session (can fix connectivity issues…sometimes)
• Exit Session – Removes you from the room

The App Vs Desktop Version

I’ve primarily used the Desktop Version of the platform. It’s easy to navigate and set up your acting and reader profiles.

It’s also easy to see who’s online and find who you want to work with.

The mobile app is also user-friendly. However, it kept crashing when I used it, which was frustrating.

But logging into the WeAudition app is beneficial as it will ring your phone when you get an ‘INSTANT Rehearsal Request.’

Definitely set up your profile on the desktop and then download the app for notifications. I recommend using the desktop for most of your platform activities.

Connecting with Professional Readers

As someone who’s been both an actor and a reader on the platform, I can attest to the quality of the readers available.

Any reader who is online is available to request. I tend to choose some of the same readers I’ve worked with, but you can always try out someone new, which I would encourage, as you never know who your next favorite reader could be!

The tabs on the home dashboard are as follows:

• Get A Reader – Choose an audition reader to read with or search by name.
• Be A Reader – Set up your own reader profile and be a reader.
• Green Room – Open session page that allows users to video chat

Most of the readers on here are working actors themselves and understand the nuances required to be a good reader.

I recommend trying out different readers. Some are more expensive than others, but a lot of people read for free and accept tips.

Casting directors, stunt performers, and other industry professionals are also available as readers. If you find a reader that you click with, ‘Favorite’ their profile so you see them at the top when they’re online.

Once you select a reader, you’ll be taken to their profile and can connect with them instantly!

Networking

While it’s not overtly a networking tool, WeAudition provides opportunities to network through the in-person events they host in various cities, as well as the organic conversations that happen during reading sessions.

I’ve found myself chatting with actors on the platform during out reading sessions. Respect people’s privacy and time, however, if you’re both comfortable, feel free to chat about your careers!

The Actor Monologue Writer, which is essentially an AI Monologue Writer, will ask you a series of questions about the type of monologue you’d like, and then it will produce one for you.

Easy peasy monoluges! This actor GPT is a winner.

6. Agency Cover Letter Coach GTP

When you are ready to craft an agency cover letter, you need to be using the AI Agency Cover Letter Coach!

This AI GPT tool will ask you a series of questions including the name of the agency or manager you are applying to, links to your public, shareable acting profile, and link to the agency or manager’s website.

This will allow this GTP to tailor the resume to fit your experience and to personalize it to the agency you are submitting to.

I get it, AI is changing the game and it’s very possible it could affect our work. I’ve said it numerous times on this blog, it’s better to understand this beast than to fear it, so I’ve put together this list of 5 AI use cases for actors to use in their careers to give them an advantage.

I’ve also put together a list of AI tools for actors to use in their careers, so if you’re not sure which tools you should be using, check out that post.

These are all AI use cases for actors that I’ve personally used myself in my acting career activities and I can’t even begin to tell you how much time they have saved me. But enough talk, let’s see it in action!

AI Use Cases for Actors

If you want to act in the age of AI, using AI is unavoidable, and you can bet your grandma’s sweet homemade muffins that Hollywood will be utilizing AI to its fullest, so we are going to break down how AI can be beneficial to an actor in their self-management tasks.

Thousands of businesses use AI to automate processes and save time. Your acting business deserves the same treatment.

1. Scene Creation for Demo Reel and Acting Clips

Finding the right scene can sometimes feel like finding the right grain of sand in the desert. But don’t worry. With generative AI, we can now create any type of scene we want that is catered to our location and available resources.

Below is a sample prompt to enter into your AI chatbot of choice. In my examples, I’m going to use ChatGPT Plus, which has access to the internet and a more powerful model:

“Pretend you are an expert scene writer for TV/movie scenes. I will provide you with a list of variables, and you will use them to write a scene I can use as part of my acting demo reel. The scene should require minimal editing and be filmable on a smartphone.

Here is the list of variables:

• Location: Small Apartment
• Characters: 2 characters, 1 man 1 woman
• Genre: Dark Comedy
• Length: 1 minute

Don’t use any special formatting. Plain Text only.”

As you can see, the first output below is a little cheesy and may not be the exact script you want, but feel free to add more variables or describe to ChatGPT what you would like.

2. Crafting Your Actor Practice Schedule

Do you practice your acting craft daily? For most of us, the answer is no. But it doesn’t have to be. You can quickly craft a daily practice routine for yourself. Use the following prompt in ChatGPT.

“I’m an actor and I want to set up a daily practice routine. Can you help me create a schedule that incorporates 1 hour of improv and also leaves time for vocal exercises?”

This routine is a great start and can get you motivated to start practicing your craft daily even when you’re not in class. Many actors (myself included) have trouble understanding how to train when you’re not working with a coach.

Re-work the prompt to get the perfect actor practice schedule. This is by far one of my favorite AI use cases for actors who are looking to stay sharp and stay in practice for whatever comes their way.

3. Crafting Agency Cover Letters

Once you have your actor package (resume, headshots, clips) together, you may be looking to start crafting your perfect agency cover letter. This is one of those AI use cases for actors ready to jump into the ranks of the represented!

I used this exact strategy when crafting the cover letter that landed me my current agent. Ultimately, it’s your actor package that will get you a good agent, so don’t expect this to bypass that requirement.

Being able to quickly craft customizable cover letters will help save you time and stay on top of your submissions. I recommend creating an agency submission tracker as you submit.

I also recommend having the version of ChatGPT that can access the web. Here’s the prompt you’ll put into ChatGPT.

You are an expert at helping actors write effective cover letters to talent agencies. I will provide you my acting resume, you will write me a cover letter based on the submission requirements of the above link.

LImit the cover letter to [insert word count here] and keep it focused on how I can add value to them. Keep the tone casual, professional and add some humor.

You won’t get the perfect cover letter right off the bat, but it’ll be a great first draft. Tell ChatGPT to make adjustments until you get a cover letter worth sending.

You’ll definitely want to copy the draft into a text editor and give it a personal touch.

4. Scene/Character Analysis

One of the most important skills for an actor to have in their toolbelt is the ability to review a script and break down the scene and characters. AI lets you do this at another level.

You should learn how to do this without AI, and then you’ll better be able to craft good AI prompts to extract important themes and meanings from your script.

Here is a powerful prompt that can help you understand a character in your script without copying the entire script into ChatGPT.

Using this line from the script: “[insert line here]”, can you help me identify potential themes and how they might influence my character’s role within the narrative?”

This is pretty incredible to me. Look how much in-depth ChatGPT went into the analysis! I’m not smart enough to go this deep on my own and this analysis can give me valuable insights into how my character might think or feel or what their value system is.

Try this prompt right now with a scene you are working on and see what insights it gives you!

5. Creating Social Media Posts

Social media is an important part of an actor. I recommend following Allison Haselden for tips on actor branding and social media. AI can help you craft your social media posts when your mind is in a bog (like mine regularly is).

Again, once you understand your goals on social media, you’ll better be able to craft the right AI prompt to get the output needed for your social media content.

Here’s an example for you to chew on in the meantime

Create a series of 4 tweets where a new actor discusses the challenges and learnings of their first on-set experience to initiate a conversation on Twitter.

You can add more info to the prompt if you want it to be more specific to your experience, but you can see how useful AI is for helping actors craft content. This is an important AI use case for actors wanting to grow their personal brand on social media and online in general!

It’s arguably the most well-known AI tool out there and for good reason. I use ChatGPT daily for tasks outside of acting, and the paid version is well worth it to me. The free version can give you tons of value too.

4. Books on Acting Techniques: For exploring different acting methodologies

There’s no ‘best’ acting technique. There’s the technique that’s best for you. Regardless of your preferred technique, there’s likely a book for it.

The Meisner technique is one of the most popular. So naturally, you should be familiar with the book Sanford Meisner on Acting by the man himself, Sanford Meisner.

Books, after all, are the acting technique tools for actors outside of taking classes and training.

5. IDEA (International Dialects of English Archive)

This Archive contains dialects from people all over the world. So, if you have to learn a specific dialect, this audio dialect library likely has the voice you want.

It’s one of the best accent tools for actors out there!

6. Character Journals: For in-depth character study

I’ll be honest: this acting tool isn’t for everyone.

Not every actor journals their way through understanding a character, but for those who like placing their thoughts into writing, journalling as your character can be a powerful way to unlock those motivations, obstacles, and values.

If you are a real-life journaler, why not journal for the character you study?

7. Vocal Dampener for Vocal Warmups

There aren’t many tools for actors to warm up their voices with. Enter the vocal dampener! Don’t worry; I didn’t know this existed either.

A vocal dampener is like a portable warmup room. It’s a device placed over your mouth that allows you to perform vocal warmups without waking the neighbor.

You’re not always in a space where you can be loud, so having this handy little device on hand will help remove any hindrances restricting your ability to make noise.

This one might be the most innovative of all the tools for actors! lol, just kidding, but let’s face it, as actors, we’re pretty loud and boisterous in general.

I know people who should be wearing a vocal dampener regardless of whether or not they are warming up!

8. Notepads, highlighters, pens, oh my!

Okay, this one feels like we’re back in school, but acting class should be taken seriously.

Acting is a craft that requires note-taking and documentation. You’ll need to make notes on your scripts as you rehearse and jot down adjustments your acting coach gives you when rehearsing a scene.

Notes are the tools of acting that allow you to recall the feedback and put it into practice.

9. Durable Footwear

You may be on your feet for a while, so opt for comfy, soft-soled, and squeak-free shoes.

Dodge the heels and leather boots – they’re drama and not the kind we want.

When in doubt, check with your acting coach when going to class. In my experience, tennis shoes are not ideal for use in scenes.

10. Recording Device: For recording rehearsals for review

This can be your smartphone or another easy-to-use camera.

If class permits it, record your session and watch it back because sometimes you might miss those golden nuggets your coach gave you or discoveries made in class.

It’s always helpful to be able to review your work.

11. Rehearsal Skirts/Dance Belts: For movement during rehearsals

We’re not all dancers out here, but enough of you are to make it worth investing in some rehearsal skirts or dance belts for those high-energy, lots-of-movement rehearsals, even for non-dancers.

These items act as tools for actors to move freely during rehearsals.

12. Audition Websites Subscriptions: For finding and tracking auditions

In the United States, the two most significant audition/acting profile sites are:

If you are new to acting and don’t yet have an agent, you’ll still want to have profiles on these sites.

However, Backstage is a popular starting-out site for new actors to start looking for work.

Be sure to search for local acting/filmmaking Facebook groups for projects you could act in.

13. Audition Tracker

Create a Google Sheets document and track your auditions.

You don’t need to track everything you submit yourself to (unless you want to), but you should track your auditions to understand what type of work you’ve been auditioning for.

It can be helpful later on in your career.

14. Audition Readers

Most self-tape auditions will have instructions for you to have a reader.

When you get an audition, you’ll likely receive a scene with multiple speakers, including the character you are auditioning for.

An audition reader can read the other character lines for you when you record your self-tape audition. The tools of acting involve your fellow actors!

Many actors will read for other actors over Zoom. Having a network of actors to call on when you need someone to read is important.

But if you’ve taken acting classes or any training, chances are you’ve made some friends.

Ensure you exchange info with them and offer to read for them if they ever have auditions. I’m sure they’ll reciprocate!

Most self-tapes need to be at eye level and steady. You don’t want to stack books on each other whenever you need to raise your camera.

16. High-Resolution Camera or Smartphone: For filming those video auditions

Most smartphones will suffice. Most of us have a phone with a good enough camera for self-tapes, and plenty of actors book jobs just using their phones.

There are great options for stand-alone cameras if you want to up your game. I use my iPhone 15 Pro for all my auditions, which has a fantastic camera!

17. Acoustic Panels: For sound quality improvement

This one I would say is more optional. If you do voiceover work, you’ll want these, but they’re probably not needed for self-tapes as you’ll typically be standing in front of a backdrop.

If you have an echoey space, maybe it’s worth it.

18. Backdrop Stand and Muslin Backdrop: For a professional look in self-tapes

That will work fine if you have a solid-colored wall in your apartment or home.

If not, it might be worth getting a backdrop to help make your self-tapes look more professional. Casting directors don’t expect you to produce a Steven Spielberg movie.

Still, as self-tapes have become more standard, there is an expectation of a bare minimum level of production quality, and a solid background with no distractions is one of those expectations.

19. External Microphone: For clear audio recording

Most smartphones shouldn’t need an external mic, but upgrading your audio might be worth it, depending on your space.

Omnidirectional mics can attach to smartphones, so don’t think you’re stuck with just your phone’s mic.

20. Teleprompter Apps: For aiding with line delivery

When you don’t have time to memorize all the lines for a self-tape audition read, a teleprompter app or external teleprompter device can come in handy to ‘fake’ memorization as best as possible.

21. Self-Taping Apps

Depending on your level of tech-savvy, you can use or not use an app for self-tapes.

A popular app for self-tapling is Slateable – Self Tape Yourself and Cold Read, a line learning app.

22. Video Editing Software

When editing together a self-tape, the amount of editing needed is minimal. I use iMovie on my MacBook Pro, and it works fine. If you have a PC, Movie Maker should work fine as well.

An Actors’ Wardrobe

At the beginning of your acting career, and even well into it, you’ll likely be working on lower-budget projects that don’t have wardrobe departments.

These are good wardrobe items to have on hand in case you have to provide your own costume. You can read more about what should be in an actor’s wardrobe here.

The below list is just a suggestion to be well prepared.  As long as you have a variety of logo-free t-shirts, jackets/hoodies, a pair of jeans, and a suit, you should be good for most roles.

If the project you’re working on needs something more specific, they should cover it.

It will also be up to them to provide the wardrobe if your clothing will be ruined during the shoot. Otherwise, use the below as a general guide.

• Well-fitted suits in grey, navy, brown, and black.

You’ll know beforehand the location and time of your shoot.

I’m not going to ask what you’re cleaning up, but chances are, you’ll need to clean something up. So bring some wet wipes!

Your name is one of the ultimate marketing tools for actors to promote themselves. Have you secured your actors’ domain name yet? Do it now!

It’s so cheap, and you don’t want someone purchasing it after you are famous and making you pay them a lot of money to get it.

42. Website Hosting Services: For hosting the actor’s website/portfolio

One of the most important marketing tools for actors is your online portfolio.

Many website hosting services are available to build your acting portfolio/website.

My portfolio, for example, is hosted on WPX for WordPress and uses a Kadence theme; however, it’s a little more on the technical side. That’s because I also run a blog.

A simple website builder like Wix will work fine for most actor portfolios.

43. Actor ‘Type-Finder’ Tool: An AI Talent Branding Expert to Tell You Your Type!

This tool is one of the best AI tools for actors (I’m biased since I made it).

Actor Finances are often overlooked. Having financial stability is a crucial aspect of successfully pursuing an acting career.

I use Rocket Money, which lets you monitor your accounts and subscriptions, credit score, net worth, and more, and create a budget.

But use the best app for you. You should be monitoring your finances to some degree.

52. Mileage Tracker: For tracking travel expenses related to acting jobs.

If you’re treating acting like a business, which is it, then your mileage costs will be nice write-offs.

Of course, if you’re booking work and traveling a lot, you’ll want to work with an accountant, as mentioned in the next step.
